Week 2 - Brief Breakdown and Planning - Arianna

 Brief Breakdown

We took a look at the brief and tried to interpret it first. We came up with the interpretation that we are being asked to look at something human and real. Something that cannot be replaced by A.I. or anything artificial.

This includes stories, real life places, or mundane things. Focusing on one of these things, we should then create an interactive piece of media (prototype) which can be shared with people. This can be a physical piece of media or digital.

 Ask Mary -

This theme focuses on people and their stories. One of our ideas was "Things parents tell their children to make parenting easier". This would focus on our experiences with our parents growing up. It's all about the white lies parents would tell us growing up to keep us safe/to discipline us, e.g. "sugar will make your teeth fall out".

We were thinking of turning these experiences into an interactive and very visual website, where people would be able to share their own experiences anonymously as well, making it fun and interesting for anyone who visits.

However, it has also been suggested to us that we could turn this idea into some kind of interactive book, such as a pop up book or a textured book. This stays on theme with childhood and growing up as these kinds of books are usually aimed at children. This could also perhaps play on peoples emotions and make them nostalgic for when phones were't such a big part of their lives, something that is very prominent in children's lives today.

The Block -

This theme focus on locations and their stories. We had the idea of going to a specific place over a prolonged period of time to document the different things that happen there day to day. It could be a completely overlooked place to a place bustling with people. We would aim to take as many photographs as we could have this place and journal/document our experiences. This could also play into perspective as we are all different people who view things differently and notice different things.

Some ideas for what we can do with this documentation can range from things such as websites, videos with little animations reenacting what we saw or even a photo album where we can print out photographs of the place and draw in what we saw, emphasising it.

Boring -

This focus on things we overlook due to their mundane nature. An idea we looked at was cycling. Of course some people enjoy it but it is due to context. If you're just getting around by cycling such as to school/college or work, it can be quite boring.

We were given the idea to enhance this experience with things such as colourful wheels or changing the centre cap to some sort of fun design. We are still exploring this idea.

Overall, the topic that interests me the most so far is "The Block" as I think it would be fun to do something more artistic, drawing/animating what we see. However, "Ask Mary" is also interesting to me.

We are still deciding on/exploring a theme so I am sure we will generate more ideas over the end of this week.
